Playing with numbers … it is more than just counting!
Playing with numbers gives children, in their environment, opportunities to see numbers, explore counting, work out quantities, know the position of numbers, use numbers for labelling, explore patterns, learn about equality and informally, and confidently add, subtract, multiply and divide. Come and experience this workshop as we investigate ways to create learning environments that immerse children, from Kindy/Prep to the formal years of school, in all aspects of numbers to lay a strong foundation for mathematics.
Judith trained at the Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers College and furthered her skills by securing qualifications to support children with impairments. She has worked as a preschool teacher, advisory teacher and numeracy adviser for the Year Two Diagnostic Net.
Recently she was a curriculum writer specialising in early childhood mathematics, contributing to the production of teacher resources such as the Year One Numeracy Learning statements, Preschool Curriculum Guideline, Outcomes Mathematics Curriculum and the Essential Learnings. She has also written pre- and post-graduate courses for universities. Throughout her various roles she has often provided professional development.

Maggie Dent - Wilma and why the basics matter
Maggie Dent ECTA Tour sponsored by Early Childhood Teachers' Association (ECTA)
Wednesday 3rd September 2014
at James Nash High School
Performing Arts Centre, Myall Street Gympie
More children than ever are arriving in our schools with one or more developmental delays and this creates a "gap" that is almost impossible to overcome throughout the school journey. Using the metaphor of a wise grandmother or aunty, Wilma the wallaby, Maggie explores back-to-basics, common sense wisdom in her role as a guide for parents of children under six. She discusses what is essential for babies and toddlers and how meeting these needs allows children to thrive and be ready for school and life.
26/2/14 All Aboard: Laying the tracks for confident communicators
We take talking so much for granted that it is easy to underestimate the impact it has on so many aspects of development and our daily life. It can be seen as the acquisition of vocabulary and grammar - a knowledge of the rules which govern our language (English) and growing accomplishment in using language. Or it can be seen as one of the major underpinning skills for successful social interaction, emotional development, behaviour and self-management, classroom learning and literacy / numeracy. It isn't just about words or clear articulation. But it is about world knowledge and social connectedness. Basically it is about getting on with those around us and achieving our full potential.
Doctors believe that everything boils down to health and well-being; Schools believe it is all about literacy and numeracy; OTs might think that it all goes back to basic toilet training.
